ZEISS VR One Plus Virtual Reality Headset Review

The Zeiss VR One Plus is one of the best VR headsets for iOS. It’s easy to use, simply place your iPhone in the phone tray and watch split screen virtual reality content. A headset that many feel is a big step up from the Gear VR headset, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the quality and construction, not to mention how comfortable it is to wear.

A Virtual Reality Headset for Apple Users

The phone tray designed to keep your smartphone snug and secure during use is one of the many features that separates this headset from other low priced mobile models. This tray is compatible with iPhones 7 and higher. The included tray features a notch located directly in the middle. The notch will help users to correctly line up their phone’s screen so that it’s placed directly in the middle of the lenses.

Inserting the phone is simple, but you may notice that the tray fails to cover the screen’s corners. This isn’t a big deal, but it can allow the phone to slide.

The headset’s construction feels more durable than other models in this price range. It’s also heavily padded for user comfort.

The front panel of the headset is made out of a thick translucent plastic. The logo is discretely placed in the bottom left corner. The main portion of the headset is made out of a solid thick matte white plastic. The black trim features small vents that are covered from below with a layer of foam mesh. The vents have been added in the hopes of preventing the lenses from fogging up during use.

Around the headset, you’ll also find a triple layer of foam and a head strap designed to keep the headset securely in place during use. These straps are highly adjustable.

Featuring High-Quality Glass Lenses

Instead of cheap plastic lenses, which you’ll commonly find in mobile VR headsets, the One Plus uses Carl Zeiss glass lenses. The difference is a major improvement in image quality and sharpness. However, these quality lenses still cannot prevent the screen-door effect that’s common among iphones when used in a VR headset. The screen door effect refers to the ability to clearly see individual pixels, which can ruin the immersive experience for some. Even when viewing HD apps or movies, the quality tends to look a bit low res when it’s magnified. However, this issue is more commonly found in older iPhones such as the iPhone Five.

While with other models of mobile headsets, such as the Gear VR, you’re required to plug your phone into a micro USB port, this headset uses a slide out tray. The tray is a great touch that makes it much easier to insert or remove your smartphone. The tray is also designed for improved phone positioning.

The tray features a cut-out that allows the iPhone’s camera to peek through, and the cover on the headset allows you to view your environment without any distortion or cloudiness.

The manufacturer uses the one size fits design for the lenses, claiming the lenses feature Zeiss precision which will result in the best viewing experience for ninety percent of users. Basically, this means you’ll be unable to adjust the lenses at all. There’s no way to adjust interpupillary distance, or the distance between the user’s eyes and the lenses, which can make this headset a poor choice for any gamer who wears glasses.

Title Availability and Compatibility

In terms of content options, the lack of variety is an issue. The manufacturer currently offers a small selection of apps that are designed specifically for this headset: Cinema, Exposition, AR, and Media. The Media app works as a hub for all of the virtual reality content that can be found in the Apple app store or in the Google Play store that are compatible with this headset. Most of the apps available are low resolution. You’ll have an easier time finding compatible apps on your own in the Apple or Android stores.

The AR app is used in combination with colored paper cubes that come with the One Plus package. The cubes themselves are packed flat so you’ll need to assemble them before use. The app uses the camera on your smartphone to view the cubes, allowing a variety of fun creatures and items to emerge from within the cubes.

The Exposition app will take you on a tour of an art gallery, allowing you to get up close to the artwork.

The Cinema app allows gamers to downscale videos for a virtual reality experience.

Pros

  • Affordably priced and made out of quality materials.
  • The heavy padding makes this headset more comfortable to wear compared to competing models.
  • As a whole, the headset and lenses have a high build quality.
  • This headset is also compatible with content by Google Cardboard.
  • The headset offers a one-hundred-degree field of view.

Cons

Currently, there aren’t many titles to choose from in the Apple app store.

Like any model of mobile VR headset, seasoned gamers felt that the headset didn’t offer the type of magical immersive quality they were looking for. But if that’s the case, then you’re better off spending more for a top of the line tethered model such as the Oculus Rift.

Before you buy you must make sure you choose the right One Plus model with the correct tray size.

The headset isn’t designed to support smartphones with a screen larger than five and a half inches.

Some larger vents are needed to prevent the lenses from fogging up.

The inability to adjust the lenses can be a big issue for some gamers.

Conclusion & Rating

Those new to virtual reality won’t be bothered by the smaller screen during gameplay. The Zeiss VR One Plus headset is well-built, and a great model that can give iOS users a glimpse into the world of virtual reality. While the overall experience or its content can’t touch leading tethered headsets, the good news is that once Apple launches more apps, this headset will only get better. An iPhone screen will never be able to compare to the sharper screens you’ll find in true virtual reality headsets, but the VR One Plus is as good as any iPhone based VR headset is going to get. We gave this headset a rating of four out of five stars.
