Samsung Galaxy S8 Smartphone Review

Just a few years ago, mobile virtual reality gameplay wasn’t something the serious gamer would consider, but with the addition of new mobile virtual reality headsets, and the release of the Samsung Galaxy S8 now the gamer can enjoy the best of both worlds. But does the Galaxy S8 have what it takes to make the loyal iPhone user make the switch?

The Galaxy S8 by Samsung has a new, sleek, futuristic design that consists of rounded edges and curved glass. The glass design seamlessly transitions to a metal rim placed around the outside of the phone. While the phone’s thinner edgier design makes it appear more fragile, Samsung claims this model is one of their toughest, most durable smartphones to date.  Intuitive, easy to use, and offering a new, lightweight design and durable Gorilla glass, the S8 brings even more to the table with its ability to play the best adult VR games using some of the top-selling VR headsets for mobile gameplay. So, is the S8 the next big smartphone? And is it really worth it to make the switch to the Galaxy? Let’s find out.

Overview and Features

The S8 is compatible with both the Google Daydream headset, and the Samsung Gear VR, so new users will have two of the best VR headsets to choose from.

While the fact that gamers can now take advantage of one of the best VR systems for mobile gameplay, it isn’t the only reason this phone is constantly out of stock.

The new, streamlined design features well-crafted buttons. The manufacturer has changed up the entire button control design, placing the power button on the right, well away from other controls so it’s much easier to find. A heart rate monitor is located next to the single lens camera, with a thick layer of Gorilla Glass placed over the rear of the phone to improve durability. On the bottom of the phone, you’ll find both a headphone jack and a USB port.

The fingerprint reader has been moved right next to the phone’s rear camera, which can make it difficult to access and use.

New and Improved Display

Once again, Samsung has produced a phone that features one of the best display screens on the market, measuring in at 6.2 inches. The black and white contrast is immaculate, while the rich colors are bright and vivid, giving your images a stunning sharp look.

The longer length of the display combined with the way it arcs away at the sides is perfect for HD video streaming or virtual reality gameplay. Watching movies on this smartphone has a theater feel to it, offering a more immersive experience, especially when combined with impressive contrast ratios and rich colors.

In terms of storage, the S8 features sixty-four GB of onboard storage in addition to a memory card slot.

The phone is also equipped with the Octa-core sixty-four-bit ten NM processor, designed to effortlessly meet all your video streaming and gaming needs.

The phone’s new and improved user interface makes navigating through a variety of menus much easier compared to Samsung models of the past. However, iPhone users may find it difficult to easily navigate the S8’s totally different interface style.

Virtual Reality Gaming on the S8

In order to play virtual reality games on the S8, consumers will need to purchase the Samsung Gear VR or the Google Daydream.

This is pretty exciting for gamers, who will be able to access a wide range of virtual reality games on the go. Both compatible virtual reality headsets work in much the same manner. After you plug the S8 into the headset, you’ll be able to interact with the virtual reality platform using a small remote.

Unlike top gaming headsets such as the Oculus Rift, both the Samsung Gear VR headset and the Google Daydream are reasonably priced.

Google Daydream is the cheaper option and it’s less intimidating, featuring a more compact design compared to the Gear VR, making it a better choice for the beginner or casual gamer. The Daydream also syncs up with your Google ecosystem, so you don’t have to deal with maintaining a separate Oculus account. The Daydream makes launching web-based virtual reality experiences incredibly easy, and its virtual reality version of Chrome will allow you to bookmark them right on your desktop.

Apps and Games

Compared to the game selection for the Gear VR, the Daydream is lacking in variety. While Daydream doesn’t have YouTube, users can still download the Facebook 360 video app.

The Gear VR is a more comfortable option, offering a better fit, with more durable straps so the headset provides a nice snug fit. It also features a focus dial for pupil distance, providing a cleaner, clearer image.

Pros

  • The Samsung S8 allows gamers to choose from the Google Daydream VR headset and the Samsung Gear VR headset
  • The phone’s new modern design makes the phone more durable while cutting out the bulk
  • The processor is fast, so you can enjoy gaming and video streaming without the fear of lag
  • The new USB port and headphone jack design are conveniently located on the bottom of the phone
  • The improved user interface makes it easier to navigate through different menus
  • The larger display screen makes this phone perfect for mobile gameplay and video streaming.
  • This phone is both dust and water resistant

Cons
