DJI Mavic Pro Quadcopter Drone Fly More Combo Pack Review

The Mavic Pro by DJI combo pack includes the drone, in addition to virtual reality goggles, extra propellers, two extra flight batteries, a car charger, shoulder bag, charging hub, and an adapter. Basically, it comes with everything you need to pilot your own virtual reality drone right out of the box.

VR Flight with the Mavic Pro

Offering a great, lightweight, foldable design, this drone VR is easy to transport and store. Simply take out your drone, unfold each of the four legs and it’s ready for flight. The back two legs sit slightly lower than the two front legs and unfold from the base, while the two front legs flip out.

The drone’s gimbal protector can unclip and comes with an extra, smaller clamp that’s used to prevent the gimbal from sliding around during transport. Keep in mind that the drone will be unable to fly with the gimbal protector in place, so you’ll need to get the hang of removing both pieces before a launch.

The propellers are also foldable and will automatically flip out once the motor starts up. The Mavic Pro is rather small compared to DJI’s last model, making it perfect for pilots in search of a highly portable model.

High Functionality

The included controller features a fast and simple setup, and it’s compatible with any type of smartphone. The fold-out arms on the controller feature rubber inserts designed to grip and secure a smartphone. The phone will plug directly into the controller via a  short cable. The controller connects to the drone automatically using RC or Wi-Fi. This allows the pilot to view the live camera feed and adjust the settings accordingly.

Compared to transmitters produced by DJI in the past, this controller is totally different. Pilots will love the large LCD screen which displays more flight info in a highly user-friendly interface that’s easy to navigate. The controller also displays motor RPM, signal meters for GPS, and flight speed. The controller will display the battery levels for both the controller and the drone. Located at the bottom of the screen is a clearance indicator which displays the distance between any detected obstacles and the drone.

On the right corner is a jog wheel which can be used to adjust ISO, exposure correction, and image settings. The shoulder buttons will allow the pilot to stop or start recording video or take photos.

Drone Construction and Camera Quality

Currently, DJI is the one manufacturer to combine lots of automated flight modes and high performance in an ultra-compact controller.

Despite its smaller size and lightweight design, this drone is solidly built, with a construction that consists of a type of tough, thick plastic. However, the camera, which is gimbal mounted, feels pretty delicate. Fortunately, the included gimbal cover does a great job of protecting the camera when not in use.

Camera Setup

While small, the camera is pretty powerful. The camera’s sensors are able to capture twelve MP stills in DNG RAW or JPEG format, in addition to videos and frame rates at 1080p at 96 FPS.

As we mentioned, the camera is mounted on a small motorized gimbal and some drone sensors. The gimbal can make almost instant adjustments in order to keep the drone level. If the drone is set to POV mode it will turn and tilt along with the drone.

Flight Cameras

On the drone you’ll find a total of four cameras, but these cameras are not designed for photography, instead, they’re designed to aid the drone in safety and flight stability. A couple of the cameras that face downward work to keep the drone from drifting in areas with poor GPS coverage. The other two cameras face frontwards and work to detect any obstacles using a forward arc.

When you add in all of the easy to use features and the top of the line safety features, this drone is easily one of the best choices for beginners and seasoned pilots alike.

VR Flying Like a Pro

The included virtual reality goggles offer excellent resolution in full HD and can connect to the drone wirelessly using the OcuSync video link. This headset is pretty chunky, but the thick adjustable headband and lightweight design make these goggles pretty comfortable to wear.

Located on the inside of the headset are a couple of 1080p panels which offer an eighty-five-degree FOV, which is pretty decent considering true gaming virtual reality headsets usually offer ninety-degree FOV. There are a couple of buttons on the base of the headset that can be used to navigate the menu and a focus wheel.  The display is crystal clear and easy to read. The connection with the drone and headset are faultless, offering a more immersive flying experience. The manufacturer also allows you to pair a second compatible pair of goggles to the same drone, which will allow you and a friend to enjoy the same flying experience.

For some, the size and build of the drone is concerning. Clearly, it’s not durable enough for drone racing.

The included controller is pretty basic and nothing to write home about.
